2023 Tesla S Photo.JPG

Introduction

During the Super Bowl in 2023, there was a commercial that aired that presented the current design of Tesla’s auto-pilot feature in a negative light, demonstrating various examples of times when the auto-pilot part of the car did not recognize objects of child size on the road, which can have possible deadly consequences. Even though Tesla promotes the feature explaining that the auto-pilot user must still regardless be both vigilant and paying attention to the road, the affordances of the feature clearly do not heed to this as users have been caught doing other activities at the same time such as sleeping while currently driving. These two possible dangers could have very detrimental outcomes as terrible accidents could arise if these do not get addressed.

Case Summary

Concerned about the dangers of an auto-pilot feature that could cause in various different ways large amounts of harm to all around, from both those in these Tesla cars to those in their immediate physical surroundings, I chose to re-design this feature in order to make driving/being in their vicinity safe for all. The process that I went through in order to fully be able to accomplish this complicated issue was a simplified standard one of design: prototypes (low/mid/and high-fidelity) and user testing (concept ideation and research behind it was conducted by our professor beforehand). As of after the four weeks of the project I now have a high-fidelity prototype that demonstrates a revamped Tesla auto-pilot feature that I desire changes the game for car features like this which are supposed to promote individual/consumer safety!
